Connecticut Asbestos Exposure Sites — Electric Boat, Pratt & Whitney, Sikorsky & GE

Introduction

Connecticut has one of the most significant industrial asbestos exposure histories in the United States. The state's dense concentration of defense manufacturing, aerospace, shipbuilding, and industrial facilities employed hundreds of thousands of workers throughout the 20th century — and for decades, asbestos was woven into the fabric of nearly every major facility.

Mesothelioma, the cancer caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure, has a latency period of 20 to 50 years. Workers who were exposed at these facilities in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s are still receiving diagnoses today. Connecticut recorded 715 mesothelioma deaths between 1999 and 2017, and new diagnoses continue to emerge from the state's industrial workforce. Learn more about what mesothelioma is and how it develops.

If you or a family member worked at any of the facilities below and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease, you may have significant legal rights. Jazlowiecki & Jazlowiecki LLC has been handling Connecticut mesothelioma litigation for over 22 years. Founding partner Edward Jazlowiecki holds a degree in Chemical Engineering in addition to his law degree — giving the firm a scientific understanding of asbestos and the specific products used at Connecticut facilities that most mesothelioma attorneys simply do not have.

Connecticut's Major Asbestos Exposure Sites

General Dynamics Electric Boat — Groton

The largest asbestos exposure site in Connecticut. Submarine construction at Electric Boat from the 1940s through the 1970s involved massive quantities of asbestos insulation, gaskets, and pipe covering in the confined spaces of submarine hulls. A landmark 1975 study found that approximately half of 1,000 Electric Boat workers examined had X-ray abnormalities consistent with asbestos exposure. Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engine Plant — East Hartford

One of Connecticut's largest employers since 1925. Jet engine manufacturing involved asbestos in pipe insulation, boiler insulation, furnace linings, gaskets, heat shields, and engine components. At peak, Pratt & Whitney employed 40,000 workers. At least 17 asbestos bankruptcy trusts list Pratt & Whitney as a known exposure site. Learn more about Pratt & Whitney asbestos exposure →

Sikorsky Aircraft — Stratford

Helicopter manufacturing at Sikorsky from the late 1930s through the 1980s involved asbestos in brake linings, gaskets, heat shields, adhesives, and fireproofing. Published Connecticut settlements for Sikorsky workers range from $1.13M to $1.74M. Learn more about Sikorsky asbestos exposure →

General Electric — Bridgeport & Connecticut Facilities

GE operated manufacturing facilities across Connecticut where asbestos was used in turbines, electrical insulation, and industrial equipment. A 2024 Connecticut verdict awarded $22.5 million to a GE plant worker's family. Environmental asbestos releases from GE's Bridgeport facility are the subject of ongoing litigation. Who Is at Risk?

Connecticut workers most likely to have been exposed to asbestos include:

  • Submarine construction workers — pipe fitters, insulators, boilermakers, electricians, and shipfitters at Electric Boat
  • Aerospace and aircraft engine workers — machinists, assembly workers, maintenance staff at Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky
  • Helicopter manufacturing workers — assembly, blade shop, and maintenance workers at Sikorsky
  • Construction tradespeople — insulators, pipefitters, electricians, and carpenters working in pre-1980 buildings
  • Navy veterans — personnel who served on submarines built at Electric Boat
  • Family members — secondary exposure from asbestos brought home on work clothing

Your Legal Options

Connecticut workers and their families have three primary legal pathways for asbestos compensation. Learn more about how to file a mesothelioma claim:

  • Civil litigation — personal injury or wrongful death lawsuits against the manufacturers and distributors of asbestos-containing products used at your workplace
  • Asbestos trust fund claims — over $30 billion currently held in 60+ bankruptcy trusts. Connecticut submarine builders typically qualify for multiple trust fund claims
  • VA disability benefits — for veterans whose asbestos exposure occurred during military service

Connecticut statute of limitations: 3 years from date of mesothelioma diagnosis (Conn. Gen. Stat. § 52-584). Wrongful death: 2 years from date of death (§ 52-555). Do not wait.
