What is the Belviq Lawsuit?
Belviq (lorcaserin) is a medication used for chronic weight management that works by stimulating the serotonin 2C receptor which produces a feeling of fullness. It is approved for use in patients with a BMI over 30 or in patients with a BMI over 27 who also have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes.
Before Belviq was approved, the FDA noted in its review that rat studies showed a link with breast cancer and a particular type of brain tumor.Following its approval in 2012, the FDA required that the company conduct a post-marketing clinical trialto examine long-term safety related to cardiac and other chronic effects.
On January 14, 2020, the FDA issued a Drug Safety Communication stating that they were analyzing the clinical trial data for a possible increase in cancer rates with Belviq use. Then on February 13, 2020, the FDA requested that Belviq be pulled from the market due to the potential cancer risk. Eisai complied, immediately withdrawing the medication from the U.S. market while also stating that they did not believe there was any cancer risk.
The data from this trial (called CAMELLIA-TIMI) shows the largest increased risks for lung, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers. For each of these cancers, the data appears to show at or above a doubling of the risk although analysis by an epidemiologist is necessary to tell for sure and to check for significance.
