The minutes and days after a serious crash matter. These steps protect your health and your legal rights.
At the Scene
Check on everyone and call 911. Ask for medical help even if injuries seem minor, because adrenaline can hide serious problems. Take photos of the vehicles, the road, any skid marks and your injuries. Get the other driver's name, contact details and insurance information, and the names of any witnesses.
In the Following Days
- See a doctor and follow your treatment plan. Gaps in treatment give insurers a reason to question your injuries.
- Keep records of medical bills, missed work and any other costs.
- Report the accident to your own insurer, but keep the details short and factual.
- Do not give a recorded statement to the other driver's insurer before speaking to an attorney.
- Do not accept an early settlement offer. Early offers are usually low, and you may not yet know the full extent of your injuries.
Check Your Own Coverage
Connecticut drivers must carry uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. If the other driver has no insurance or too little, your own policy may help. Read how uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage works.
Know Your Deadline
The general deadline to file is 2 years from the date the injury is first sustained or discovered, and no more than 3 years from the crash. See our statute of limitations guide.
